Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly had a minor nervous breakdown because of a Washington Post Opinion column arguing that Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff is a “progressive sex symbol.”
Catherine Rampell wrote for The publisher Emhoff, a former entertainment lawyer who has been married to Harris for 10 years, embodies “the modern female fantasy,” prompting Kelly to call the media “absolutely disgusting.” She also claimed the column was an attempt by Rampell to improve her standing with Democrats.
“She’s the one who wrote the article ripping Kamala’s economic plan to shreds for price gouging and saying that’s ridiculous when they accuse you of being a communist and maybe you shouldn’t even be proposing communism as an economic plan,” the commentator said of Rampell, adding that she “got trashed by her readers on the left, so a week later she writes this nonsense to redeem herself with the left about the current Second Gentleman, a man who, may I remind you, cheated on his first wife with the nanny he impregnated.”
“Either they aborted the child or he abandoned it. Either way, not good,” she claimed.
Kelly read an excerpt from the opinion column in which Rampell wrote: “Emhoff is so sure of his masculinity that he sometimes puts his wife’s ambitions first. about his own. What. A. Gorgeous. Guy.”
“Regardless of his past marital drama, he is now the ideal partner for working women: He is a successful alpha but doesn’t feel threatened when his wife is too,” Rampell added. “He loves his job, but he loves his wife more. He knows that ‘feeding’ the family is about more than financial support, and that temporarily putting his own professional ego aside doesn’t make him any less of a man.”
The Independent asked Rampell for comment.
Emhoff admitted earlier this month that he had an extramarital affair during his previous marriage, according to a report by Daily mail. It was a relationship with a teacher at his children’s school and not with a nanny, as Kelly claimed.
The affair took place years before Emhoff met Harris. Email reported that the teacher became pregnant in 2009 but did not carry the child. Two sources told CBS News that the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. The network also reported that Emhoff and his first wife were still legally married at the time of the affair but had separated.
Emhoff said in a press statement after the Email Story: “During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some difficult times because of my actions. I took responsibility and in the years that followed, we worked through things as a family and came out stronger.”
“Doug and I decided to end our marriage many years ago for various reasons,” Kerstin Emhoff said in a media statement earlier this month. “He is a great father to our children, continues to be a great friend to me, and I am truly proud of the warm and supportive blended family that Doug, Kamala and I have built together.”
