The war and the treaty hit the State Fair with hurricane force and it was a good thing

Heavy rain and high winds forced the cancellation of concerts at the Minnesota State Fair on Monday night. On Tuesday, a hurricane called The War and Treaty hit the fair’s Leinie Lodge Bandshell with such force that fair officials may consider canceling all other concerts and booking The War and Treaty for the remainder of the season.

The War and Treaty — Americana Music Award-winning husband-and-wife team Michael and Tanya Trotter — have played the State Fair before. As Michael pointed out, the first of their two shows was canceled last time, so he urged fans to just show up on the second night when the duo returns for the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

The scene: The bandshell was packed. Some fans wore T-shirts that said “The War and Treaty,” Michael proudly noted, and some wore Zach Bryan T-shirts because he was in Minneapolis on Saturday and his song “Hey Driver” features “The War and Treaty.”

The War and Treaty, a self-described country gospel group, brought the crowd to church and the Grand Ole Opry. And mid-set, the Trotters broke into “The Star Spangled Banner,” during which concertgoers stood and many took off their hats. Tanya later pointed out that she wore a camouflage top because the fair was Military Appreciation Day and Michael is an Army veteran who served in Iraq.

The music: The War and Treaty took the stage with an explosive “Proud Mary” (not the nice and easygoing version) before launching into their own wild song “Lover’s Game,” the title track from last year’s album. Accompanied by a cracking five-piece group and Michael’s piano, the Trotters leaned heavily on this record, their third full-length, and played some new numbers that are due to appear on an album next year.

Raised in church and formed in Michigan, the duo has made a name for themselves since moving to Nashville and entering the world of country music. They’ve performed at country award shows and were nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s Grammys. The War and Treaty won Group of the Year at the 2023 Americana Music Awards. And they’re nominated for a People’s Choice Country Award on Sept. 26, when they’ll perform at that show.

Key findings: If last year at the Fine Line Club in downtown Minneapolis they came across like the Mike and Tanya Trotter Revue, except that unlike Ike and Tina Turner they really love each other, this time The War and Treaty impressed like the next-gen duo of Al Green and Aretha Franklin who have crossed over to gospel. That’s how remarkable their singing was. Michael presented an elastic voice with powerful depth and angelic high notes. And Tanya’s incredibly soulful, goosebump-inducing voice would have shattered the roof if there had been one in this open-air venue.

Their love for each other was more than tangible. The way they sang face to face, wiped each other’s sweat, and sparked with their public displays of affection made you want to yell “get a room.”
