Browns rookie DT Mike Hall Jr. placed on Commissioner Exempt List after arrest

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. has been placed on the Commissioner Exempt List for the start of the 2024 season.

The list is used only for what the league calls “unusual” circumstances, including but not limited to players who are either accused of a crime or involving the use of physical force. Hall will continue to be paid but will not be included on the Browns’ 53-man roster and will not be allowed to participate in practice.

The team announced Hall’s addition to the roster on Tuesday as part of efforts to reduce the size of its roster to the 53-player minimum required for the regular season.

Hall was arrested on August 13 on domestic violence charges stemming from a woman who told police she was his fiancée. According to the Avon, Ohio, police incident report, Hall allegedly tried to force the woman out the front door and later dragged her on her back across the porch to the end of the driveway.

The report states that Hall later followed her into a room with a handgun and pressed the gun to her temple. Police found two handguns on a mattress, a Glock .40 caliber and a Smith & Wesson 9mm. The incident report states that police found damage in the house that was consistent with the woman’s description.

Hall, a 2024 second-round pick, was arrested and arraigned the next day. The Browns did not practice the day of Hall’s arrest, but Hall was back with the team and participated in practice the following day. The only practice he missed in training camp was due to injury. He played in all three preseason games.

Only NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority to place a player on the exempt list, and Goodell will ultimately decide if and when Hall is reinstated. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has repeatedly declined to comment on the allegations against Hall, saying the team intends to wait out the legal process.
