2024 Preseason Game 1 Steelers vs. Texans Live Update and Discussion Thread – Second Half

The Houston Texans scored a touchdown with their starting lineup and added another late in the half on a missed fumble punt by Quez Watkins. They also scored a field goal with a few seconds left in the half on a long drive led by Davis Mills.

With all the starters now well out of the game, the second half will be about evaluating the players on the roster. Their contributions on offense and defense are important, but many of them can make the team on special teams.

The Texans take a 17-0 lead early in the second half. Watch the second half play below.

BEGINNING OF THE 2ND HALF

Matthew Wright kicked the ball away and it was returned to the 30.

1st and 10, Cam Akers through the middle for 3 yards. 2nd and 7, Tim Boyle connected with Akers for 8 yards.

1st and 10, Boyle completes to Xavier Hutchinson for 4 yards. 2nd and 6, Akers from left tackle for 5 yards. 3rd and 1, Akers up the middle gains just enough for a score.

1st and 10, Boyle incomplete deep pass to Sims, broken up by Kalon Barnes. 2nd and 10, pass dropped by Ben Skowronek. 3rd and 10, incomplete to Skowronek, deflected by Anthony Averett and nearly intercepted by Miles Killebrew.

Scotty Miller returned to catch the punt and called a fair catch. The punt hit the ground and rolled out of bounds at the 22.

1st and 10, Aaron Shampklin from left tackle for 3 yards. 2nd and 7, Kyle Allen found Calvin Austin III for a 24-yard gain.

1st and 10, Allen passes to Dez Fitzpatrick for 10 yards, but Connor Heyward calls for holding. 1st and 20, Shampklin through the middle for 9 yards. 2nd and 11, Allen passes to Jaray Jenkins along the right sideline for 16 yards.

1st and 10, Allen passes to Heyward for a loss of two. Allen was called for a false start on 2nd. 2nd and 17, Allen passes to Austin deep left for 25 yards.

1st and 10, Jonathan Ward around right end for 3 yards. 2nd and 7, Ward was tripped and fell on a holding call against TE Matt Sokol. Penalty was declined. 3rd and 7, Allen scrambled for 11 yards to convert.

1st and goal from the 6-yard line, complete to Connor Heyward for six yards and a touchdown. The Steelers finally get on the scoreboard. Wright missed the PAT. 17-6 Texans.

The kickoff was returned to the 24-yard line.

1st and 10, Akers from right tackle for 5 yards. 2nd and 5, Boyle complete to Akers for 14 yards.

1st and 10, Akers up the middle for 1 yard, stopped by Ryan Watts. 2nd and 9, Hutchingson ends up for 19 yards, tackled by Killebrew.

1st and 10, incomplete pass under pressure from Thomas Graham Jr. 2nd and 10, Akers around right end for 2 yards. 3rd and 8, complete to Akers for 2 yards. Payton Wilson missed the first tackle.

The 51-yard field goal was good. 20-6 Texans.

Daijun Edwards received the kickoff and returned it to the 28-yard line.

1st and 10, Allen passes to Scotty Miller for 6 yards.

END OF 3RD QUARTER

2nd and 4, Allen passes deep to Scotty Miller for 38 yards.

1st and 10, Edwards through the middle for 3 yards. 2nd and 7, Edwards through the middle for 24 yards.

1st and goal, Edwards through the middle for a touchdown. The Steelers try two, La’Mical Perine is stopped and the attempt was no good. 20-12 Texans.

The Texans bought plenty of time with a 15-play drive, but the 32-yard field goal was not enough.

1st and 10, Allen passes to Shampklin for 1 yard. 2nd and 9, Allen was sacked and lost the ball but was recovered by the Steelers. 3rd and 20, false start to Anderson Hardy. 3rd and 25, Allen passes to Shampklin for 3 yards.

TWO MINUTE WARNING

Cameron Johnston punted 50 yards and returned 10 yards to the 50-yard line.

1st and 10, Brooks up the middle for 3 yards, tackled by Jacob Slade. Steelers call their first timeout. 2nd and 7, Brooks tackled for no gain by Kyron Johnson. Steelers call their second timeout. 3rd and 7, Jet Sweep brought down by Kyron Johnson, loss of yardage. Tomlin called timeout number 3, so the offense now has a minute and a half to march down the field and score. The punt bounced out of bounds at the 13.

1st and 10, Allen passes 9 yards to Edwards, but he couldn’t get out of bounds. 2nd and 1, Allen passes 6 yards out of bounds to Jenkins.

1st and 10, Allen threw the ball away. 2nd and 10, Deuce Watts caught Allen’s pass for 9 yards and was hit hard at the end of the play. 3rd and 1, Allen completed to Tarik Black for 11 yards.

1st and 10, Allen slammed the ball down to stop the clock. 2nd and 10, Shampklin fought his way out of bounds and lost a point. 3rd and 11, Allen threw the pass too far and was intercepted by Brandon Hill, ending the game.
