Ready for a slower life? Get over $16,000 to move to the Spanish countryside

Ready for a slower life? Get over ,000 to move to the Spanish countryside

Those ready to switch to a slower pace of life and spend their days strolling through ancient squares, UNESCO World Heritage sites and scenic countryside can now afford to take this step.

The remote Spanish region of Extremadura, bordering Portugal, is offering grants of up to 200 digital nomads and teleworkers of up to 15,000 euros (about $16,778) to move there for at least two years.

The grants will be used for “available housing, farmland and everything necessary to expedite their arrival,” the website says.

The offer is part of a repopulation program called “Live in Ambroz” – the Ambroz Valley and its charming rural villages. The valley “is one of the areas that suffers from a constant decline in population and services,” said a press release from the Extremadura government on Sunday.

Extremadura is a very rural region of Spain, with just over 1 million inhabitants in 2023, according to CaixaBank Research – by comparison, Madrid has 3.3 million people. Also, unlike Madrid, life in Extremadura is cheap. In Badajoz, a province in Extremadura with Moorish roots, rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is about €475 (about $531) per month. In Madrid, a centrally located one-bedroom apartment costs about €1,366 (about $1,528).

The rural region is also struggling economically and is one of the smallest contributors to the country’s GDP, contributing less than 2% of Spain’s GDP. The main economic sector is agriculture.

However, Extremadura has much more to offer. The region is Spain’s second largest wine producer and has the most freshwater coastline with beautiful inland beaches. The region is rich in history, medieval ruins dating back to the time of ancient Rome and beautiful Moorish architecture that make travelers feel like they are stepping back in time.

The government hopes to extend the program to other parts of Extremadura that need revitalization.

How do I apply for a life as a digital nomad in Extremadura?

Authorities told Euronews that applications for the grants are expected to open in mid-September and, once available, applications can be submitted online through Extremadura’s General Electronic Access Point.

The 15,000 euros will be divided into several grants: women and people under 30 living in a city with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants will receive 10,000 euros (or $11,185), and everyone else will receive 8,000 euros (about $8,947), according to Euronews. After two years, the former will receive another 5,000 euros (or $5,592) and the latter 4,000 euros (about $4,473).

Here are the requirements for the application:

  • You must never have lived in Extremadura in the last six months.

  • Be a legal resident of Spain, for example through the country’s own digital nomad visa

  • Remote work in the technology industry
