It has been eight years since Grace VanderWaal won the 11th season of America’s Got Talent and she shares a rare update on her life.

The singer and actress, now 20 years old, was approached on the streets of New York City to appear in TikTok Star David Carmi‘s Confidence Heist video series. She was asked what gives her confidence when walking the streets of the Big Apple.

“When you have to go somewhere, you seem self-conscious because you’re in a hurry,” she replied. “I like to go shopping and eat.”

grace was also asked about her biggest challenge in becoming famous at the age of 12.

“I honestly felt like it helped me as a person because it put me under the microscope,” she said. “And it kind of forced me to sink or swim.”

Your secret for more self-confidence? “Just accept who you are… yuck, that’s so trite, but it’s true… your strengths.”

And her advice to her younger self? “Don’t trust anyone,” she said.
