Stellantis plans to cut up to 2,450 jobs and stop production of the old Ram 1500 model

Key findings

  • Stellantis is stopping production of an older model of the Ram 1500, which could lead to nearly 2,500 layoffs.
  • The 1500 “Classic” is manufactured at a plant in Warren, Michigan.
  • The automaker has not announced a replacement vehicle, which raised alarm bells at the United Auto Workers union.

Stellantis NV (STLA) is stopping production of its Ram 1500 Classic truck and laying off up to 2,450 factory workers.

The vehicle is manufactured alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at a plant in Warren, Michigan. A newer version of the 1500 truck was introduced in 2018 and is manufactured at another plant in the region.

“With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren, Michigan truck assembly plant will cease later this year,” a Stellantis spokesperson said. “…Other operations at the plant will continue to operate in two shifts to support production of the Jeep Wagoneer.”

The layoffs are expected as early as October.

“Decisive measures”

Stellantis has not yet announced a replacement vehicle for the 1500 Classic, which is a warning sign for the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. After a strike lasting several weeks last year, the union negotiated new collective bargaining agreements with the three major Detroit automakers.

The decision came less than a month after the owner of the Chrysler and Jeep brands announced it would take “decisive action to address operational challenges” after reporting a 48 percent year-on-year drop in net profit in the first half of the year.

Stellantis shares fell 1.4 percent to a new 52-week low on Friday.
