In this science fiction story, Sofía, a highly advanced humanoid robot with artificial intelligence, embarks on a scientific mission to Antarctica with climate expert Ismael. Over the course of the five episodes, listeners learn that Sofía is not just any AI. She develops feelings and complexities so human that you almost forget that Sofía is a machine, which leads to a multitude of consequences.
The Spanish-language podcast is written by Julio Rojasthe creator and screenwriter of the acclaimed series Case 63. “In Natural selectionI want to explore a pressing question: What will the dynamic be like between a human and a self-aware, emotionally capable machine? What connections might emerge? How will power dynamics play out, and who will ultimately make the decisions?” explains Rojas.

Sofía is brought to life by the Mexican actress, singer and producer Dannaand Ismael is voiced by the Chilean actor Alvaro Rudolphy.
In addition to exploring important questions about the use of artificial intelligence, the series also uses AI-based tools for various production aspects. While the script was written by Rojas, he used AI tools to adapt some parts of the protagonist’s content and make her sound more human. In addition, Sofía’s voice recordings were made at Spotify’s Los Angeles studios and then fed into an AI model to obtain the final voice. The goal of this creative approach was to obtain a realistic recording of what an AI would sound like. Finally, AI was also used for the image of Sofía in the podcast. A digital artist and graphic designer specializing in AI design worked with a real portrait of Danna and subjected it to an AI program to create the final character.
