Secrets revealed in the Timrod Library

Anyone who enjoys curling up with a cup of tea and a good crime novel will surely enjoy the Timrod Library’s next program, “A Comfortable Murder: British Detective Fiction of the Golden Age.”

Furman University English Professor Dr. Margaret J. Oakes will speak at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, in the Catherine Stewart Room of the library. A British tea reception will follow the program.

Space is limited, so registration is recommended for this free event. Reservations can be made in person at the Timrod Library, 217 Central Ave. in Summerville, or by phone at 843 871-4600.

Oakes’ lecture will explore the history of the crime novel, beginning with Wilke Collins and GK Chesterton through to the coronations of the “Queens of Crime”, including Dorothy Sayers, Agatha Christie and Margery Allingham.

Oakes specializes in English Renaissance literature. She also has an interest in and studies British crime novels and children’s fantasy literature. She appears at the Timrod Library courtesy of the South Carolina Humanities Speaker’s Bureau.

The Timrod Library is open to the public Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit thetimrodlibrary.org, call 843-847-4600, or stop by the library at 217 Central Ave. in Summerville.

Timrod Library Fall Festival planned for November 2nd

The Timrod Library’s annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, November 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the library grounds at 217 Central Ave. in Summerville. Admission is free.

The heart of Fall Fest is the book sale, which features hundreds of used books of all genres and for readers of all ages. The sale also includes select vintage, rare and unusual books.

Shoppers will also find homemade soups and casseroles, a selection of home-baked goods and handmade gifts. The Hanahan Sweetgrass Basket Weavers will be on-site offering a selection of their handicrafts for sale.

This year’s Fall Festival also features a silent auction at the library, with many unique items, experiences, rare books and artwork available for bidding. A drawing for 50/50 cash prizes will be held at 2 p.m. Winners do not need to be present to win. Tickets for this drawing will be available at the library beginning October 1.

All Fall Fest proceeds benefit the nonprofit Timrod Literary and Library Association, which operates the Timrod Library. Founded in 1897, the library is privately supported by memberships, donations and fundraising. The Timrod Library is open to the public Monday through Saturday. For more information, visit thetimrodlibrary.org, call 843-847-4600 or stop by the library at 217 Central Ave. in Summerville.
