Devin Haney vs. Liam Paro: Possible on December 7 in Australia

Devin Haney vs. Liam Paro: Possible on December 7 in Australia

Promoter Eddie Hearn is trying to negotiate a deal for IBF light welterweight champion Liam Paro to defend his title against Devin Haney on December 7 in Australia.

IBF’s 10-pound rehydration limit

If it happens, it will be a good fight because it gives former two-weight world champion Haney a chance to redeem himself after his last appearance. However, Haney’s 10-pound rehydration rule could cause problems for the IBF.

In his last two fights at light welterweight, Haney has looked terrible coming into weight, and it’s not realistic that he can reach the International Boxing Federation’s 10-pound rehydration limit on fight morning.

Devin has the money to pay penalties if he misses the second weight check on fight morning. If the penalty isn’t too harsh, Haney will have no problems and will have a chance to win a belt against one of the best champions in the 140 kg division.

Paro: A risky opponent

It’s a risky rematch for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), who lost his last fight to Ryan Garcia on April 20. The result was later changed to no contest, but the 25-year-old Haney still suffered a loss in that fight and could be vulnerable to the power of the Australian Paro.

“I’ve spoken to him (Haney) and he says if the deal is right, I don’t think he would have a problem with it,” Eddie Hearn told BoxingScene.

There was talk of Haney moving up to 147, but he may have realized that’s not a good option for him. Welterweight fights are dangerous for fighters like Haney, who lack power and striking ability. He’s better off staying at 140 as long as possible.

The left-handed Paro has a lot of power and could be a complete wrong fit for Haney, who showed weakness on the chin in his fight against Ryan. He was injured several times in that fight and was apparently saved by the referee in the seventh round after being knocked down by Ryan.

The referee stopped the match to deduct a point from Ryan for his counterattack, but gave no warning beforehand. To some fans, it looked as if Haney was saved.
