Michigan State will soon take the field for its first game of the season and the program’s first major game under coach Jonathan Smith.
The Spartans’ first home game is against the Florida Atlantic Owls. Coach Smith plans to use the game to showcase Michigan State to potential future recruiting prospects and use it as a springboard for what will hopefully be a successful first season in East Lansing.
While Michigan State has a challenging season ahead of them as they face Oregon and Ohio State in a few weeks, the Spartans have a manageable first and last game ahead of them this upcoming season. Michigan State has a chance to make it to a bowl game if they win the winnable games early and late in the season and win one or two games they won’t win. The Spartans should get off to a strong start to the season as they are favorites to win their first game.
Most of the predictions for the upcoming college football season have already been released, and the outlook for Michigan State’s first game is positive. ESPN’s SP+ is a rating system used to predict the outcome of college football games. ESPN’s Bill Connelly recently released the SP+ predictions for each of the Week 1 games on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The system has predicted Michigan State to beat Florida Atlantic in East Lansing by nearly two touchdowns. ESPN’s SP+ has predicted a Michigan State win by a score of 26-14, which technically means ESPN’s SP+ does not believe Michigan State will cover the 13.5-point spread set for the game. Michigan State’s season opener against Florida Atlantic is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
Smith and the Spartans will need to capitalize on their winnable games early in the season, including the opening game against Florida Atlantic and another home game shortly after against Prarie View A&M. Michigan State will need to get off to a respectable start to the season as their schedule becomes significantly more difficult midseason.
