Fresno Unified offers a free health clinic before the first day of school

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — 7,400 Fresno Unified State University (FUSD) students will have their first day of school in a week on Monday, and all must have current vaccinations.

“Some of the kids are new to us and new to school. They need to get all their vaccinations, so they’re on a vaccination plan… and they’re on a schedule,” said Liz Torres, FUSD’s executive director of health services.

Torres says the district runs health clinics to help parents.

“We had some in July and now in August we’re hitting hard; we have Gaston with clinics and Herrera with clinics,” Torres said.

She says the vaccinations help students stay healthy.

Most students are required to receive vaccinations when they enter kindergarten and move on to secondary school.

“Our seventh graders usually need a TDAB BOOSTER to be able to go back to school,” Torres said.

Miracle Williams will soon be entering 7th grade and was at Gaston Middle School with her parents on Friday morning for her vaccinations.

Her father says the free clinics have made her life easier.

“We don’t want to travel all over Fresno, but if they provide these free resources, it’s convenient for us and others in the community,” said Father Ryan Foster.

Torres says that last year, about 60 to 70 families showed up for the free clinics, which she says only highlighted the need in the community.

“It’s just a community effort to make sure all of our children are vaccinated, stay healthy and can go to school so they can learn,” Torres said.

The clinics are for Medi-Cal and uninsured students only.

According to Torres, those with private insurance should contact their doctor or a pharmacy.

If no insurance card is presented, the student physical exam fee is $15.

There will be a free walk-in clinic next week at Tioga Middle School. Find out more here.
