Liberty County residents completely flooded after record rain from Tropical Storm Debby

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – An entire community in Liberty County is completely flooded. Residents say they’ve never experienced anything like it before, but they’re trying to make the best of it.

“The water is going to rise. If you all want to come swimming, if you all want to come, get water in a bottle and bring it to the house. It is what it is,” said resident Joseph Stanley.

Joseph Stanley is in a pretty good mood these days, even though his house is surrounded by water whose bottom you can’t even see.

“I have a lot of water and I still want to get in here, so I don’t know,” Stanley said.

Tropical Storm Debby has passed over southeast Georgia, but record rainfall is causing water from surrounding rivers to flood onto roads and into residential areas, such as Mt. Olivet Road in Fleming.

“There’s all that water back here trying to flow through a little piece like this, and it’s just going to keep backing up,” Stanley said.

Stanley says it is a community of about a hundred people, one that sticks together in these difficult times.

“We had a family here who didn’t even know there was flooding around their house,” Stanley said.

He took his truck, like many others who live on Mt. Olivet, and helped them drive down the road.

“I couldn’t ask for a better community. This is a really good community,” Stanley said.

WTOC will continue to follow this community as we learn more about the impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.
