An upcoming election and ongoing construction of Carrboro’s new library are prompting local government to change the location for early voting.
Orange County had previously announced the future Orange County Southern Branch Library as the city’s early voting site for the 2024 general election — but a county statement Friday said the planned opening has been “delayed beyond the first day of early voting.” As a result, early voting will be held at the city-owned building at 108 Bim Street, part of the Carrboro Town Hall complex, where early voting has taken place for the past two election cycles.
The Bim Street location is one of six possible locations where Orange County voters can cast their ballots in early October. The other five are: Orange Works at Hillsborough Commons on Mayo Street, Chapel of the Cross church in Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill Public Library, Seymour Senior Center in Chapel Hill and Efland-Cheeks Community Center.

A date for the public opening of the library facility — nicknamed “The 203 Project” and likely to be dedicated soon — has not yet been announced. In its last update on the project on Aug. 14, the city of Carrboro said the opening date would be coordinated between it and the Orange County government after construction is complete and furniture is moved in. The two governments are sharing the $42 million cost of the project, which will include both a library and a public building.
The August 14 update also included additional details on the work in progress. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and security infrastructure continues to be installed and lighting systems are almost complete. Several stormwater features are also being completed. Some of the upcoming work through late August and September includes finishing and painting walls, installing ceiling materials and restroom work.
Early voting in North Carolina begins Thursday, October 17 and runs through Saturday, November 2. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5.
