Mother arrested after allegedly leaving her three-month-old child in a hot car while riding at a carnival

A Nebraska mother has been charged with child abuse after allegedly leaving her three-month-old baby alone in a hot car while she visited a county fair, authorities said.

Cara Dugan, 40, was arrested at the Merrick County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 24, the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Police were called to the fairgrounds around 1:30 p.m. after a toddler was reportedly left unattended in a car.

According to the sheriff’s office, the three-month-old baby was found after someone heard the baby crying and searched several cars in the area. The statement said Dugan allegedly left her baby in her pickup truck with the engine off and the windows partially open “for a considerable period of time.”

At the time, Dugan was inside a building riding a horse, the sheriff’s office said. She was arrested and taken to the Merrick County Jail, where she was charged with child abuse. It is unclear if she has pleaded guilty or has retained an attorney to speak on her behalf.

The three-month-old baby, whose gender was not disclosed, was examined at a local hospital. There, medical staff determined the baby was not injured, authorities said. The baby was then placed in the care of the Nebraska Department of Health.
