Epic gives Unreal Engine developers a larger share of product revenue

Epic Games announced today that it will retain a smaller share of sales through its Unreal Engine Marketplace, which allows creators such as digital artists, sound designers and programmers to sell products for game developers to use in their own projects. Going forward, creators will now be allowed to keep 88 percent of their product sales, up from the 70 percent they previously retained. In addition, Epic Games will apply this new split retroactively, so any sale made since the platform’s launch in 2014 will be subject to the new rate.

The company says this move was made possible by both increased Marketplace growth and Fortnite. “Thanks to the growth of the marketplace and the success of FortniteEpic now does a huge volume of digital commerce,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a statement. “The resulting economies of scale allow us to pass the savings on to the Unreal Engine Marketplace community while generating a healthy profit for Epic.”

As for the marketplace’s growth, Epic said the number of active sellers increased by 30 percent in the first half of this year. The marketplace now has more than 1,500 developers selling more than 5,000 products, and there have been more than 8 million downloads since its launch. As of July, over 6.3 million users have opted for Unreal Engine 4 – an increase of one million since March.
