Brian Kelly explains the history of integrating coordinators into his system

SELECTION LSU vs. USC from Las Vegas | Brian Kelly, Garrett Nussmeier vs. Miller Moss, Lincoln Riley | 08/26/24

LSU will look different both on and off the field this upcoming college football season, as new offensive and defensive coordinators are at the helm on both sides of the ball following the Tigers’ 10-3 record last year. With former Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker take the reins of defense and Joe Sloan was hired internally as the new offensive playmaker.

This is not head coach Brian Kelly‘s first rodeo when it comes to coaching changes as he enters his 22nd season as head coach at the FBS level. And during a Monday appearance on The Paul Finebaum ShowKelly talked about how he has been able to adapt to these changes over the years.

“I think when there’s a process in place and standards are set, it’s a lot easier,” Kelly said. “Because then you’re really just teaching them what your style is, what your culture is, what are you about?”

“This is my fifth defensive coordinator. Michael Elkostarted eight years ago with Mike. We had seven consecutive 10-win seasons with five different defensive coordinators. Clark Leeobviously on the way, Marcus Freemanand then we got here. So we continued that process along the way. Offensive coordinators, Mike Denbrock, Tommy Rees, Chip longand now we are obviously moving forward in the same direction with the same process.”

Kelly has done an excellent job of hiring coordinators over the years, many of whom are now head coaches, but when it comes to making sure they get the most out of his players no matter where he coaches, Kelly relies on the culture he has built.

“So when you do that and you have a culture like that, you can just go out and hire the very best. And I think especially Blake and Joe Sloan. Blake Baker is going to do a great job for us on defense and we’re just going to put them in and let them be who they are and let them go out and coach and develop our players,” Kelly concluded.

Sloan has big shoes to fill after LSU had the best offense in the country last season, while Baker is tasked with reviving the Tigers’ defense, which was disappointing last season. Fans will get their first look at both new units on Sunday when LSU faces USC at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
