Let the camera run

A beginner’s mistake is to shoot videos that are too short. Anything under 10 seconds is difficult to edit later. If something interesting happens, let it happen and keep shooting. Pixels are free!

Don’t go wrong

Enable Grid and Layer in your camera settings so you can maintain the video layer.

Integrate movement

Videos look best when there is movement; usually this is the subject of your video.

However, if nothing is moving (for example, you’re shooting a video of a beach or the mountains), you can move the camera from side to side by tilting it one way and then the other while recording to create a subtle sliding motion.

This also works particularly well when there is something near the camera.

Think of the pan

When you decide to pan the camera from side to side, there are three things to keep in mind.

Wait three seconds before you start panning, and then wait three seconds after you finish panning, so you have room to edit on both sides.

And secondly, slow down the whole thing considerably – fast panning is difficult to observe.

Finally, try to end your video with something more interesting than the beginning – this is called a “reveal”.

Zoom in consciously

For best zoom results, use your camera’s preset zoom settings rather than intermediate settings.

On iPhones, these presets are 0.5x, 1.2x, and 5x (and 3x on the iPhone 15 Pro).

Think about the final editing

If you want to create a video that is consistently interesting, variety is key.

When filming, make sure you vary the type of video you shoot so that you have a number of close-ups, general shots, and some wide shots. It’s much easier to create a compelling video edit when you can work with a mix of clips.
