24 field workers in Kings County exposed to fungicide

KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — Two dozen field workers narrowly escaped death in Kings County on Friday when they entered a field that had been sprayed with a chemical.

A hazardous materials team responded to the area of Pueblo and Tenth Avenue, southwest of Corcoran, around 9:30 a.m.

They learned that the group had been working in a field that had been sprayed with a fungicide the night before.

It was not recommended that anyone enter the field before 9 a.m. on Friday, but workers entered sometime between 5:30 and 6 a.m.

As a result, secondary contamination occurred and two people developed symptoms. Their supervisor then called for help.

“The operation was aborted and everyone left the field immediately. That was the right decision. We are trying to work as quickly as possible, but at the same time maintain safety to make sure everyone is cared for and taken care of as quickly as possible,” said Kings County Battalion Commander Blake Adney.

All were decontaminated and examined by emergency personnel.

Two people suffered from headaches and some nausea.

They were not taken to hospital but went to a local clinic on their own. All are expected to recover.
