Man arrested after chase in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A man was arrested after a chase on Saturday, August 24 and faces several charges.

A deputy with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a silver 2006 Volkswagen at 7:40 a.m. on the AL Philpott Highway heading into Patrick County.

According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the driver refused to stop and increased his speed, resulting in a chase.

According to officials, the driver was driving recklessly at a speed of over 160 km/h.

Officers said they performed the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) on the vehicle near the Gordon Trent Golf Course on AL Philpott Highway to end the pursuit.

According to officials, the driver’s tires lost grip on the road, causing him to slide into the ditch in the middle of the road.

Gary Lawrence Johnson Jr., 54, of Stuart, was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

Johnson Jr. was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear out of Henry County and was charged with:

  • Serious escape from the police
  • Driving without a license
  • Expired inspection
  • Tag cannot be displayed
  • Fictitious registration
  • Missing signal

He is being held without bail at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.

This incident remains under investigation.
