16-year-old charged with murder in North Carolina shooting that led to fatal ATV crash

LAURINBURG, NC (WMBF) – A 16-year-old is charged with murder after he opened fire on other teens riding an all-terrain vehicle in a part of North Carolina, according to police.

Laurinburg police said the juvenile suspect was taken to a juvenile detention center. His name was not released because of his age.

The charges against the suspect are related to an incident that occurred on August 22 in the area of ​​Deluca and Berry streets, where officers were called to reports of shots fired, according to Laurinburg police.

Authorities later said 18-year-old Zahquan Stewart was riding the ATV with a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old as passengers when two suspects drove by the ATV and opened fire. Stewart and the 13-year-old ATV passenger were both struck by gunfire, according to police.

The shooting also caused Stewart to lose control of the ATV and crash into a tree. Stewart later died as a result of the accident, while the teenage passengers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. No further details on their condition were released as of Monday.
