Late development of corn and soybeans in the U.S. continues to be above average. This followed another week of generally favorable conditions across much of the Midwest and the Prairies. Some areas are expected to see some issues this week due to hot, mostly dry conditions, as well as the possibility of severe storms.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 84% of corn is in the dough stage, 46% is damaged and 11% is mature, all above their respective five-year averages. Sixty-five percent of the crop is rated good to excellent, down 2% from the previous week.

89% of U.S. soybeans are in the pod setting stage and 6% are losing leaves; both rates are faster than average; 67% of the crop is rated good to excellent, 1% less.

51% of spring wheat has been harvested, compared to 53% in most years by the end of August. 69% of the crop is in good to excellent condition, a decrease of 4%.

40% of the cotton is rated good to excellent, 2% less than a week ago, with 89% of the bolls setting and 25% of these bolls opening, which is above normal levels.

79% of rice is reported unchanged as good to excellent, 97% is ripe and 33% has been harvested, which is above normal.

48% of sorghum is in good to excellent condition, down 1%, with 90% in ear, 48% in color and 23% mature, all faster than average, while 18% has been harvested, all in Texas.

30% of pastures and rangelands in the United States are in good to excellent condition, a decrease of 4%.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition figures run through the end of November.
