PANAMA CITY – The American Automobile Association (AAA) has released some travel tips and trends for those looking to get away from it all this Labor Day weekend.

Travel numbers this summer have broken records, with millions of people taking their seasonal vacations. According to AAA, domestic travel is up 9% and the cost of domestic travel is down 2% this Labor Day compared to last year.

For anyone traveling to or from Bay County, domestic flights are 2% cheaper, hotels are 7% more expensive and rental cars are 16% cheaper this Labor Day weekend than last year, according to AAA.

For locals looking to escape the heat, northern destinations tend to be among the most popular vacation destinations.

Information for drivers

AAA says drivers should avoid traveling on Thursday or Friday afternoons or early evenings. Traveling in the morning can help avoid congestion. AAA also advises travelers to begin their return journey as early as possible.

Gasoline prices in Florida are at their lowest levels in two months. In Panama City, gasoline costs an average of $3.06 per gallon, making the city one of the cheapest major cities in the state.

Musicians are scheduled to play on the front and back porches of department stores in historic St. Andrews, a neighborhood centered around 1107 Beck Ave. in Panama City, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 31.

Farmers Market at Newby’s Too on the Curve

Food trucks and vendors are expected to meet at 4103 Thomas Drive in Panama City Beach on Saturday, August 31st between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Beetlejuice 2 Party

Salty Oak Brewing Co is celebrating the upcoming release of the second “Beetlejuice” movie with a costume contest, food and festivities on Saturday, August 31st at 8 p.m. at 2337 St. Andrews Blvd., Panama City.

Melodies and tan lines

423 Productions will host a free concert on Shell Island on Sunday, September 1st from 12pm-5pm with proceeds benefiting the Anchorage Children’s Home of Bay County.

Neons Beach Shack is hosting a 1980s-themed party with live music and dancing on Friday, August 30th from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 8501 Thomas Drive, Panama City Beach.
