Former Seattle Mariners All-Star signs contract with World Series contender

Former Seattle Mariners infielder Jean Segura has joined the Baltimore Orioles after signing a minor league contract on Friday.

The deal was reported by Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner.

The Orioles strengthen their infield with a minor league contract with Jean Segura

First off, it’s unclear what the motivation is for signing Segura. Although the O’s recently suffered injuries to Jordan Westburg and Jorge Mateo, Segura has been absent from the team all season and doesn’t seem to be a quick replacement for either of them.

Maybe the O’s want to take a closer look at the 34-year-old in the minor leagues to see if they want to bring him back in 2025?

It’s hard to believe Segura hasn’t played anywhere this season, as he’s only 34 and has had a solid reputation as a player for most of his career. He played 12 years with the Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins, has a lifetime hitter average of .281 and 211 stolen bases. He can play both shortstop and second base.

Segura spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with Seattle and made the All-Star team last season. He was acquired in a trade with the Diamondbacks, the same trade that brought Mitch Haniger to Seattle and sent Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte to Arizona. He was traded to the Phillies before 2019, when the M’s were tearing down and rebuilding the roster.
