The rapid (and highly controversial) rise of AI-generated content has led to some nightmarish creations, and the latest example involves the world’s most famous ogre, Shrek. The film series is mostly known for being a lovable, if cheeky, ogre and doesn’t contain too many dark undertones. The light-hearted films feature updated adaptations of several classic childhood fairy tales with a modern twist. A new take on Shrek takes the character on a dark, gruesome journey never seen before in the DreamWorks franchise.

Someone with a creative mind and some free time took to Reddit to share a series of photos of Shrek reimagined in the most brutal way yet. The first image shows the title character confronting a pale, mysterious version of Princess Fiona in the forest.

Further images focus on Shrek, weapons in hand, ready to take on a much smaller trio of guards, presumably those working for Lord Farquaad, and the final image shows a thrilling showdown between Shrek and a hyper-realistic version of Dragon, this time resembling a creature straight out of game of Thrones.

Shrek is not the only famous family franchise to fall apart

While the images depict a dark and violent version of Shrek are just renderings (at least for now), it’s not the only franchise to receive a horror-inspired makeover recently. One terrifying example of this trend is the ever-growing horror crossover event Poohniverse. When Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood entered the public eye, a bloody and gruesome franchise was born, with the characters appearing as new faces of fear.

Another classic children’s character that gets a monstrous makeover is Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie Versions of the beloved Walt Disney creation also entered the public domain, prompting content creators to take the character to the dark side. In the horror film Steamboat Willie, the world’s most famous mouse goes on a bloodthirsty murder spree on a ferry.

The AI ​​imagery of Shrek may be disturbing to longtime fans of the ogre, but thankfully the more familiar Mike Myers character will soon be back in the spotlight. Shrek5 has been officially announced and marks the first film in the popular franchise since Shrek Forever After in 2010. Not much is known about the premise of the fifth installment in the film series, but all of the main cast members will be returning. For anyone who needs a refresher course, this very exciting casting update means that Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots) will all likely join Myers in the long-awaited sequel.
