Several important Dolphins begin the season on the PUP list

Several important Dolphins begin the season on the PUP list

As part of the roster cuts, teams across the league must also make decisions about players who will begin the season on the Reserve/PUP list, a designation that confirms an absence of at least four weeks and will be applied to several Dolphins in 2024.

Head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday (via NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe) that edge rusher Bradley Chubb, offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn and linebackers Cameron Goode will begin the year on the reserve/PUP list. A final decision on the case of wideout Odell Beckham Jr. The decision is still pending, McDaniel added, but the absence of the other three players will still be felt.

Chubb suffered a cruciate ligament tear on New Year’s Eve, ending his first full season with the Dolphins. The two-time Pro Bowler has not yet returned to training, so Monday’s update is not a big surprise. Jaelan Phillips, who was out for 2023 with a torn Achilles tendon, was able to He will be back on the field early this month, meaning he will be ready to play in Week 1. Having Phillips in the mix to start the year would help compensate for Chubb’s absence, but the latter is expected to perform when he is healthy again. Chubb has four years left on his contract.

Wynn signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins last season, but was limited to seven games due to a quadriceps injury. His level of play on the field earned him a new contract with Miami, and the former Patriots first-round pick is expected to serve as the team’s starting left guard when he’s available. After an offseason that saw a slower-than-expected recovery, Miami will have to rely on other linemen on the interior and also lack an option for tackle intensity.

Goode joined the Dolphins as a seventh-round pick in 2022. The 26-year-old did not play during his rookie season and spent the year on Miami’s practice squad. Last season, he played in all 17 regular-season games and completed a heavy workload on special teams. His absence will not have a major impact on defense, but the Dolphins’ third-phase units will be shorthanded.

Beckham will not train this week as he continues to recover from an undisclosed injury. Adding him to the 53-man roster after he has participated in little to no team practices would be a significant risk given his status as the team’s No. 3 receiver, but designating him as a reserve/PUP player would leave Miami’s receiver roster shorthanded. That will already be the case at numerous positions given Monday’s news.
