For a rare time in the history of MMAKO’s “MMA Today” column, there was a lull in the UFC’s event schedule.

There is no UFC event next week after nearly two months of fights every weekend, and for diehard MMA fans, that might actually be a good thing.

So far this year there have been 357 UFC fights, not including the fights on DWCS or The road to the UFCmuch less TUF.

That’s a lot of Octagon content. From an epic UFC 300 event to a forgettable APEX Fight Night, the three quarters of the year have brought MMA fans a little bit of everything.

Whatever makes you happy or fuels your fighting spirit, this week is your week to rest, refuel and reboot. After September 21, the next Saturday without a UFC card, the promotion will continue every weekend through Thanksgiving before ending the year with two events in December.

This section includes UFC 306-UFC 309, APEX Fight Nights through November 9th and the conclusion of DWCS on November 15, not to mention the foreign events in France and Macau on September 28 and November 23.

Knock on wood that the UFC Sphere event is not being changed, let alone the recently announced UFC 307 card in Salt Lake City, Utah. Will Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler happen? That seems more like a matter of decision than just a minor delay. If it does happen, it should take place late in the year, since McGregor primarily fights in Las Vegas.

Jon Jones’ possible retirement is also something to watch out for in the fall, as Tom Aspinall is still chasing the undisputed heavyweight title.

It’s storylines like the ones in MMA that keep diehard fans of the sport watching. It has nothing to do with a movie, but just like Georgia Tech’s upset win over Florida State on Saturday in college football, it leaves the average sports fan in disbelief.

Regardless, MMAKO will be there every step of the way, and while there may not be a UFC event this weekend to satiate appetites, the news will continue to circulate as usual.
