It may not seem like it, with parts of Texas experiencing triple-digit temperatures, but fall is upon us. While the Farmer’s Almanac is predicting “warmer than average” temperatures for Texas this fall, the weather isn’t the only indication of the impending change of season.

Many students across the state are preparing to return to school – if they haven’t already. And as of Thursday, Starbucks officially released its fall 2024 menu, which includes the legendary Pumpkin Spice Latte.

When is the first day of autumn?

In 2024, the first day of autumn, also called the autumn equinox, Sunday, September 22. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the exact time of the autumn equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is 7:44 a.m. CDT. This is the first day of what is known as astronomical autumn.

However, three weeks before the autumn equinox, some meteorologists consider the beginning of autumn. Sunday, September 1st marks the beginning of meteorological autumn, which is based on the annual temperature cycle.

What is the autumn equinox?

Equinoxes occur ontwice a year. They occur when the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, creating a nearly equal period of daylight and darkness, according to the National Weather Service. The other equinox occurs in the spring and is called the vernal equinox.

The two equinoxes occur between the winter solstice and the summer solstice, when the Earth’s tilt toward or away from the Sun is greatest.

While the leaves don’t change much near the Gulf Coast, they certainly do in North Texas. The leaves usually begin to fall in October or November and continue throughout December.

This can of course vary from year to year, as factors such as temperature, rain and sunlight can affect the exact timing of the phenomenon. For example, colder temperatures above freezing can bring out the brilliant red of maple leaves, and rain and less sunlight can also increase the color intensity.
