County agencies help homeless veterans at stand-down event | News

Several county departments are offering their services as part of San Diego Veterans Village’s “Stand Down 2024.”

The three-day event begins today, August 9, and runs through Sunday, August 11, and will assist homeless veterans with a wide range of resources, including medical, legal and mental health services, document assistance, voter registration and more.

This year’s Stand Down will take place at 2400 Euclid Ave., National City, CA 91950.

In addition to the services provided by the county, veterans in attendance have access to breakfast, lunch, dinner, clothing and shoes, employment information, hygiene items, pet services, haircuts, and more.

Among the services offered will be a unique Landlord Hub, where the County, the City of San Diego and other experienced partners aim to encourage landlords to Submit landlord interest forms and rent to veterans with vouchers.

Below you will find a list of the county offices and authorities present and the services they offer:

Solutions for homeless and equitable communities:

  • Connect veterans with housing and community resources, social service programs, and case management services.

Child Support Services Department:

  • Child support benefits
  • Driving license suspensions and amendment requests
  • General case status
  • Options for debt repayment
  • Legal advice for child support

Public Defender’s Office:

  • More than 60 lawyers and employees volunteer
  • Homeless Court program aims to remove obstacles to homelessness
  • Criminal record extract
  • Payment of fines and fees

Voter register:

  • Help veterans verify their voter registration
  • Help veterans register to vote
  • Inform veterans about their choices
  • Provision of election information

Office of Military and Veterans Affairs:

  • Compensation assistance from the US Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) driver’s licenses
  • DMV license plate for disabled people

Public health service (Friday and Saturday only):

  • Hepatitis A vaccines
  • COVID-19 vaccines for insured and uninsured people
  • Mpox vaccines (limited quantity)

Self-care services:

  • Assistance with Cal-Fresh and cash benefits, including replacement of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards
  • Help with enrolling or renewing Medi-Cal health insurance
  • Case support

Housing and Community Development Services:

  • Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) voucher support to provide housing for veterans
  • HCDS will invite housing providers to the Stand Down event where they can speak with the VASH team and the Landlord Liaison about the benefits of housing for veterans. The purpose of landlords attending the Stand Down is to gather information about current and future vacancies that can be distributed to the participating veterans.

San Diego Sheriff’s Department Homeless Resource Team:

  • Educating veterans about resources such as food, housing, employment programs, drug counseling, and mental health services.
  • Transportation to the event for veterans who need assistance getting to the area

Minutes Secretary/Circle Clerk:

  • Assisting homeless persons in obtaining a free birth certificate under Assembly Bill 1733.
  • Both the person applying for the birth certificate and the local homeless shelter must complete an affidavit. For people not born in California counties, the county clerk can assist in completing the birth certificate application and affidavit. AB1733 does not apply to people born outside of California or the United States.
