Alfred Almond, Hammondsport and Vestal high schools are among the best high schools in the Southern Tier, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of New York State public high schools ahead of the 2024-25 school year.

U.S. News’ Best High Schools rankings include data on approximately 25,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Nearly 18,000 schools, including 1,210 in New York State, were rated on six factors:

  • College Readiness
  • State assessment competence
  • Performance in the state assessment
  • Below-average performance of students
  • Scope of the university curriculum
  • Completion rate

The top three places on the list are taken by the New York schools Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Stuyvesant High School and High School Math Science and Engineering at CCNY.

Alfred-Almond Junior-Senior High School was ranked 126th, according to US News. The high school in Allegany County has about 180 students in grades 9 through 12.

According to US News, Vestal Senior High School in Broome County is ranked 190th. Vestal Senior High School has an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students.
