The BJP on Monday (August 26, 2024) released a revised list of 15 candidates for the elections to the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. The saffron party had initially released a list of 44 candidates but withdrew the document soon after.

The first list contains 15 candidates who contested in the first phase of elections in 24 constituencies. Of the 15 candidates, only one is a woman – Shagun Parihar from Kishtwar constituency.

The BJP’s central election committee met on Sunday evening to decide on the party’s candidates for the election.

Three elections will be held in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on September 18, 25 and October 1.

Elections will be held in the 90-member Haryana Assembly on October 1. The counting of votes is scheduled for October 4.

In the last parliamentary elections in 2014, when Jammu and Kashmir was still a full-fledged state, the BJP won 25 seats.

The party is making every effort to fend off the challenge from a resurgent Congress allied with the National Conference, particularly in the Jammu region, a BJP stronghold since 2014.
