Battle

  • At least 18 people were killed and 37 injured in Russian missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk on Sunday.
  • Reuters news agency reported that its security adviser Ryan Evans was killed and two Reuters journalists were injured, one of them seriously, in a Russian attack on a hotel in Kramatorsk, about 20 kilometers from the front line in eastern Ukraine, on Saturday evening. Three other members of the team escaped unhurt.
  • Russian authorities said six civilians were killed in Ukrainian attacks on Russian border areas.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had advanced up to three kilometers into Russia’s Kursk region and taken control of two more settlements there.
  • Ukraine called on Belarus to withdraw Belarusian forces and equipment, including tanks and artillery, stationed in the Gomel region on the shared border. The Foreign Ministry warned Belarus against making “tragic mistakes” under pressure from Moscow.

  • Pope Francis condemned the Ukrainian government’s move to ban a Russian-affiliated branch of the country’s Orthodox Church. “Do not touch the churches,” the pope said in his weekly prayers, a day after Zelensky signed the ban.
