Former Baltimore Ravens DB has monster day for Chargers

Less than three months ago, the former Baltimore Ravens safety announced he was coming out of retirement a year after his football career ended, but given his performance on Saturday, it’s easy to forget that he hasn’t played football in over a year.

Jefferson, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, had a monster game in Saturday’s final game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys, posting 14 tackles (11 solo), two interceptions, a forced fumble and a sack, the most on his team. After sitting out the week before, Jefferson announced his return in Dallas.

“I talked to the defense last night and said that we need to be active and assertive in this game for safety reasons,” Jefferson said, according to the Chargers’ website. “I missed last week — had a hamstring injury — and just felt healthy again and got back into the swing of things.”

“I was fully committed all week and just tried to carry that through in the game as well.”

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, younger brother of Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, sang Jefferson’s praises after the game.

“Tony Jefferson, that was a sensational game. One sack, forced fumble, two interceptions, (14) tackles,” Harbaugh said. “I always had a lot of respect for him, admiration for him and he played for my brother.”

“Family is family. Glad to see him do so well tonight.”

Jefferson, who worked with the Ravens’ scouting department last season, is now waiting to see if he makes the final roster, but it’s hard to imagine him going anywhere after that dominant performance. The 32-year-old says he feels “rejuvenated” after his year away, and it’s easy to see why.

“It took me a second to get back into the swing of things physically,” Jefferson said. “I finally got into the swing of things and the trainers took good care of me last week. I was able to go out and fly around today.”

Jefferson is one of several former Ravens to sign with the Chargers this offseason, along with running backs Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins, tight end Hayden Hurst and center Bradley Bozeman. This trend is due not only to the family connection with the Harbaugh brothers, but also to the fact that general manager Joe Horitz is a longtime Ravens executive.

Baltimore travels to Los Angeles on November 25, and with all former Ravens now wearing light blue, the game will be must-see television.
