Jakob Ingebrigtsen breaks 3000m world record at the Silesia Diamond League

Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke a 28-year-old 3000 m world record at a Diamond League meeting in Poland on Sunday.

Ingebrigtsen, Olympic champion over 1500 m and 5000 m, achieved a time of 7 minutes and 17.55 seconds at the Silesia Diamond League.

This broke the previous world record of 7:20.67 minutes, set by Kenyan Daniel Komen in 1996.

Although the 3000 m is not part of the Olympic Games or the biennial outdoor world championships, Komen’s record is older than all world records in men’s individual track races that are on the Olympic program.

Ingebrigtsen is also the world record holder over 2000 m and two miles; he broke both distances in 2023. These distances are also not part of the Olympic Games or World Championships program.

Ingebrigtsen is the fourth fastest man in history in the 1500 meters and the third fastest in the miles.

With a personal best of 7:23.63, he started the race on Sunday as the third fastest man of all time over 3000 m.

“Now I want to challenge the world records at all distances, but one step at a time,” he said after the race on Sunday, according to the Diamond League.

Also on Sunday, Joe Kovacs beat Ryan Crouser in the shot put by two centimeters (22.14 to 22.12) after winning the silver medal behind Crouser in Paris at the third Olympic Games in a row.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Olympic champion Grant Holloway avenged his only loss of 2024 by narrowly defeating Olympic bronze medalist Rasheed Broadbell of Jamaica. Holloway, who was overtaken by Broadbell in Lausanne last Thursday, won by a hundredth of a second on Sunday.

Holloway clocked a time of 13.04 seconds, just missing his 12th career sub-13-second performance. He remains tied with 1996 Olympic champion Allen Johnson for the most sub-13-second races in his career.

The next stop of the Diamond League is on Friday in Rome, live on peacock from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET.
