Walmart completes remodel of its Kalamazoo County store

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI – The Walmart Supercenter at 6065 Gull Road in Comstock Township celebrated a complete remodeling project on Friday, August 23 – just in time for back-to-school shopping and college dormitory shopping.

According to a press release, longtime store employees and manager Ronald Buffington joined the Western Michigan University Step Team, Kalamazoo Dance Crew, local veterans and food trucks in a grand opening ceremony Friday morning.

Following the ceremony, guests were able to enjoy free product samples and get an overview of the store’s new offerings.

New additions and enhancements throughout the store include a new grab-and-go food section and a private room for breastfeeding mothers. Other improvements include:

  • More shopping carts
  • More self-checkouts and more manned checkouts
  • More food pickup and delivery stands
  • Digital touchpoints via QR codes and screens to communicate products and services that Walmart offers online
  • Expanded pharmacy with new private demonstration rooms for pharmacist consultations and services
  • Relocation and modernization of the electronics department with more demo products
  • Modernized delicatessen department with fresh, warm food
  • Expanded beer and wine selection and refrigerator area
  • Modernized, remodeled toilets

“We have proudly served the Kalamazoo community for more than 20 years, so it is very special to invite our customers to join us in our celebration,” said Buffington. “Our customers will notice the exciting new additions as soon as they walk through the door. The changes and new innovations will also make shopping easier for our customers, saving them time and money.”

This is the second Walmart remodel in the Kalamazoo area in the last 10 months. The Walmart on Ninth Street in Oshtemo Township was remodeled in 2023.

In addition to a fresh coat of paint and updated in-store signage, shoppers at the remodeled Walmart will notice a mural honoring Kalamazoo’s history and culture.

The mural is part of Walmart’s Community Mural Program, which recognizes communities across America.

During the opening ceremony, Buffington presented $9,000 in grants to local nonprofits, donated in part by the Walmart Foundation.
