Dramatic pinch hit by young Baltimore Orioles star makes exclusive MLB list

Jackson Holliday’s second stint with the Baltimore Orioles this season has had some ups and downs. But this time, it looks like he’s staying.

The latest evidence came on Saturday when the Orioles hosted the Houston Astros at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

In the sixth inning, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde sent Holliday into the field as a pinch hitter for Emmanuel Rivera with the bases loaded.

Hyde hit like a rocket when he returned from Triple-A Norfolk on July 31. He joined the rare club of hitters to hit a home run on Eutaw Street with his first career home run. But like any rookie, he had his struggles.

In fact, Hyde left Holliday on the bench in part because he was going through a slump in which he lost 0 of 20 games.

Holliday did it with one hit, slamming a pitch from Astros relief pitcher Taylor Scott into the gap in right-center field and clearing the bases, allowing Gunnar Henderson, Eloy Jiménez and Colton Cowser to score.

His hit gave the Orioles the crucial runs for a 3-2 victory. According to Sarah Langs of the MLB, he also became a member of a rather exclusive club that has existed for almost 100 years.

At 20 years, 264 days, Holliday is the third-youngest player with three or more RBI as a pinch hitter in the last 90 years.

The only two players younger than him to do so were Jeff Burroughs, who did it on August 2, 1971, at the age of 20 years and 148 days, and Dalton Jones, who did it on May 19, 1964, when he was 20 years and 161 days old.

This is not the only time this season that he has made it onto a list of “youngest players.”

On August 8, he became the youngest player in American League history to hit a home run in three consecutive games, a game-winning home run with an exit velocity of 109 miles per hour.

A week ago, he became the second-youngest Orioles player to have four hits in a game, with the legendary Brooks Robinson being the only one younger than Holliday to do so.

His slash numbers still don’t look great for the season — .175/.230/.342/.572. But he’s hit five home runs and struck out 19 in 33 games. He’s also hit a double twice and a triple once.

While at Norfolk this season, he put up another set of eye-popping numbers that made him the Orioles’ most promising prospect since being drafted No. 1 in 2022. He posted a batting average of .271/.431/.477/.908 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 73 games.

Holliday spent all of 2023 as the game’s most promising prospect, tearing through the Orioles’ minor league system, hitting .323/.442/.499/.941 with 30 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs and 75 RBI.
