15-year-old student dies during football practice in Virginia

A 15-year-old high school student died of a heart attack during football practice in Virginia this week, his family confirmed.

Jayvion “Jay” Taylor was performing “light exercises” that followed standard safety protocols at the junior varsity football team’s practice on Monday, Aug. 5, before collapsing on the field after about 40 minutes of practice, according to an Aug. 6 Facebook statement from Hopewell City Public Schools (HCPS).

Although the athlete was not named in the school’s statement, his family confirmed in a conversation with CBS affiliate WTVR that it was Taylor.

According to HCPS, Taylor collapsed about 10 feet away from one of his trainers after his water broke. Two trainers near the scene of the accident immediately began CPR and called authorities.

Paramedics arrived on scene before anyone deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED), although they had access to one. The HCPS added that Taylor received additional medical support from paramedics and was transported to a local hospital.

“Our coaches and staff are not just here for football and are devastated. We respectfully ask that the entire school community be given time to mourn the overwhelming loss of this remarkable young man,” HCPS said.

Grief counseling will be offered to staff and students, HCPS added.

Taylor’s family later confirmed to WTVR that the teen, who was in 10th grade, died of a heart attack in the hospital. Although none of his family members spoke to the news site on camera, one of his friends described Taylor as “kind and sweet.”

According to the source, a teammate said Taylor would “try to get to know everyone in school,” regardless of their popularity status. Taylor was also described by friends as “positive” and “one of the best guys I’ve ever known.”
