Chinese Taipei Little League World Series roster: What you need to know about the Asia-Pacific players and coaches

Taiwan once dominated the Little League World Series, winning 17 times between 1969 and 1996. Since then, no team from Taiwan has won the title and only one has even made it to the finals. That could change in 2024.

Chinese Taipei secured its place in the international championship match with a dominant 4-0 run, outscoring its opponents 32-3 in four wins to move straight to the final.

Another win would give Chinese Taipei its best Little League World Series finish in 15 years, when none of the team’s current players were alive. However, a win over the U.S. champions would give them the long-awaited championship.

Here’s a complete look at the 12-man Chinese Taipei Little League World Series team roster.

Last year’s Chinese Taipei team was often defined by star Fan Chen-Jun. This year’s group may not have the same caliber of headliners, but results so far prove this is a strong squad.

No single pitcher is carrying the brunt of the work for Chinese Taipei, but Lai Cheng-Xi shined when he got his chance, striking out 10 batters in 4.2 hitless innings in the team’s opening game against Canada. Zhi-Kai Ciou broke the no-hitter for Chinese Taipei.

On offense, Chinese Taipei has received help at every level. Liao Hsuan-Hao went 3-3 with 5 RBIs in the team’s dominant 11-0 win over Australia, while Yen-Chun Hu had two multi-hit games in the tournament despite the overall weak offense in Williamsport.

Meanwhile, a home run and a total of 4 RBIs from Chiu Wei-Che helped Chinese Taipei to its big win over Cuba.

Here are more details on where the Chinese Taipei Little League team comes from and how they differ from last year’s group.

Where does the Chinese Taipei Little League team come from?

The team for the Chinese Taipei Little League World Series is the Kuei-Shan Little League from Taoyuan, Taiwan.

The Kuei-Shan Little League is participating in the Little League World Series for the fourth time and for the second year in a row. Last year the team took third place in Williamsport. Chinese Taipei is representing the Asia-Pacific region in the tournament for the third year in a row.

Who is the manager of the Chinese Taipei Little League?

Chinese Taipei is coached by Lee Cheng-Ta, with Kuo Hsuan-Ming and Kan Yi-Che serving as assistant coaches.

This is Cheng-Ta’s fourth time as a manager in the Little League World Series, so he knows his way around Williamsport. All he’s missing is a championship title.

That moment almost came last year when Chinese Taipei ended up finishing third after a tournament to be proud of. Cheng-Ta’s team was led by a few other players last season, including top player Fan Chen-Jun, but he told the Williamsport Sun-Gazette that the differences between this year’s team and last year’s could make the championship title possible.

While Cheng-Ta acknowledged that Chen-Jun may not be the star this year, he said, “Everyone is pretty good this year.”

That balance has worked so far, as Chinese Taipei has seen offensive explosions and kept talented lineups in check. Two more wins would give Cheng-Ta the title he has long sought.
