Bonnie Wright regrets the limited screen presence of “Harry Potter”

Bonnie Wright was disappointed with her limited screen time in the Harry Potter series.

The 32-year-old actress played the role of Ginny Weasley in all eight wizarding films, but regretted that her alter ego was not the focus in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s novels.

On Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Bonnie said, “I definitely feel like when I was building my character, I was afraid to perform and do my best.

“It was like, ‘Oh God, am I doing justice to this character that people love?’ So that was always difficult, especially because a lot of the scenes with each character were cut from the book for the movie. So there wasn’t as much to show in the movie.

“Sometimes it was a little disappointing because some parts of the character just weren’t expressed because there weren’t any scenes for them.

“I guess that made me a little worried or just frustrated.”

Bonnie explained that she had not had any discussions with producers about Ginny’s lack of involvement because she was concerned about the number of bosses reading through the scripts.

She recalled, “A million executives have gone through all that. I think what I may have taken to heart – which I don’t take to heart so much now – was that I was more afraid of, ‘Oh, I’m going to be perceived as someone who embodies this role poorly,’ rather than realizing later that I didn’t really have the opportunity to do it. So it wasn’t really my fault.”

Bonnie is grateful that Harry Potter fans also wanted to see more of Ginny in the films.

She said: “When fans share that disappointment… they do it in a way that sounds like, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted more from you.’

“And that goes for all the characters. If only there could be five-hour movies.”
