Remembering student who died in tragedy during fall break

Remembering student who died in tragedy during fall break

A student who died in an “accident” during the fall break was given his last respects.

Rufus Pomeroy was a Year 8 pupil at Redland Green School in Bristol.

He died on Tuesday, but the circumstances of his death were not disclosed.

Headteacher Ben Houghton said the student was “a loving and valued member” of the school community.

He added: “I would like to extend our deepest thoughts and condolences to Rufus’ family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“We are devastated by the loss of such a loving and valued member of our school community.”

According to BristolLive, Mr Houghton shared the news with parents on Friday but did not provide details about how the student died.

In an online message, he told parents: “I understand it is unusual to receive a message from me during the school holidays, but I have some tragic news to share with you.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that one of our eighth-graders died in an accident on Tuesday, May 28.”

The message to parents continued: “Given the impact this news will have on our community, I wanted to make sure you were informed as soon as possible, including during the half-time break.”

“This also gives you the opportunity to speak to your child again before the new school year begins.”

It continues: “We recognise that our students will react differently to this terrible news and that support is available to anyone who may be particularly affected by it.”

“This is delivered by our Wellbeing team and overseen by Bristol City Council’s Educational Psychology Crisis Team.

“For all students who need them, quiet rooms will be made available for the foreseeable future, offering a peaceful and relaxing place.

“Students are informed of this news first thing in the morning during mentoring time and receive immediate support.”

“Out of respect for his family and friends, I would ask you not to comment on this tragedy on social media,” he added.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss to our school community and will do everything we can to support you and your child.”

The student is the second student at this school to die in less than two years.

Parents were previously officially informed that a Grade 13 student had died unexpectedly in September 2022.
