On April 20, Ryan Garcia defied the expectations of many in the boxing world and defeated Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Controversy soon arose, with Garcia fails a VADA test for the banned PED Ostarine, a story that was uncovered by Daniel Rafael.

“Kingry” was then suspended for one year, which Devin Haney responded with the words: “I want to thank the New York State Athletic Commission for doing the right thing and making the right decision.” After the defeat, Haney hinted at a longer break, but the current WBC champion in the break has hinted a return could soon be an option. Eddie Hearn also commented on a Haney comeback in the podcast “All the Smoke Fight”.

Turki Alalshikh shared his thoughts on “The Dream” possibly celebrate a comeback in a rematch against Garcia during a conversation with Charlie Parson on X.

In the run-up to a possible comeback, Hearn has expressed his belief that a change is necessary for a successful comeback: “I think he needs to look at his team. His dad, I love Bill. He’s behind him 100%, but is he the right person to move him forward strategically in the ring?” asked Hearn when talking about a comeback for Haney, whom he has promoted in several fights.

Hearn further explained that the team some new ideas: “I never liked that thing with three or four trainers, where they’re in the dressing room and doing the padding with him. AJ went through that system when he boxed against Usyk – he was so lost.”

The future

Despite Garcia’s failed tests and subsequent suspension, it’s clear that critics are keen to voice their opinions on Haney’s performance. “The Dream” showed off his skills in his one-sided win over Regis Prograis – but even though the loss to Garcia was converted to a no contest, Haney needs to rebuild his confidence and get in a warm-up fight before he should seriously consider a rematch with “Kingry.”
