Robert “Bob” W. Potter, 75, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024, at St. Luke’s Transitional Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where a wake will be held one hour prior to the service. Urn burial will follow with military honors at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.

Bob was born on March 29, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, one of two sons of Ralph and Helen (Drake) Potter. He graduated from Marion High School in 1967 and then attended Kirkwood Community College and Southern Illinois University where Bob received his bachelor’s degree in funeral services. During the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Marine Corps until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal (E-4) on February 27, 1975. On October 14, 1978, Bob married Denise Duffield in Princeton, Illinois. They lived in Marion. Since 1980, he had been a licensed funeral director with Murdoch Funeral Homes & Cremation Service. For over 40 years, Bob was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. He was also a life member of the Marion American Legion – Post 298, a member of Trojan Lodge No. 548 AF and AM, Cedar Rapids Consistory, El Kahir Shrine and the Hawkeye Bicycle Association, of which Bob was a past president. He enjoyed listening to music and sailing, but most importantly, spending time with his family. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time in Potterville, where he spent most of his life and where he made many great memories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob is survived by his wife of 45 years, Denise Potter; two daughters, Tina (Rand) McNeely and Stacy (Greg) Hanna; three grandchildren, Aubrey Hanna, Max McNeely and Olivia Hanna; and his brother, Boyd (Barb) Potter of Marion, who will cherish his memories.

His parents had died before him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to St. Luke’s Healthcare Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
