“You always wonder what could have been…”

“You always wonder what could have been…”

Lorraine Kelly “always wondered what could have been” after suffering a miscarriage over 20 years ago.

The 64-year-old presenter has a 29-year-old daughter, Rosie, with her husband Steve Smith. However, she suffered a miscarriage almost 25 years ago and recalled being “very aware” of the impact it had on her whole family. However, she is glad that such topics are discussed more openly these days.

She told Saga magazine: “Sometimes I wonder what could have been. You have this parallel life that didn’t happen. I remember the time when someone said, ‘Oh, that’s very common.’ They tried to cheer me up, which made me feel even worse. I thought, ‘Oh my God, so many people feel like that.’

“And I was also very aware that this wasn’t just happening to me, but also to Steve and my mother. It has a ripple effect.

“I think it’s good that we’re talking about things like this a lot more. We’re more open, and you should be too. You should be allowed to grieve and go through the whole process in a way that suits you. Some people don’t want to talk about it, others do. It’s what suits you best.”

The former GMTV presenter and her husband tried unsuccessfully to have another child but it never worked out. Although she thinks it “would have been nice” to have more children, she is “lucky” to have Rosie.

She said: “That didn’t happen to us.

“We didn’t do anything to prevent it. But we never did anything to prevent it, like IVF or testing. And when it became clear that it wasn’t working… I was in my early forties and thought our time was over. But we were very lucky to have Rosie, a happy, healthy child. It would have been nice, but there are a lot of positives to having just the one.”
