A trade between the Chiefs and the Texans to say goodbye to Kadarius Toney once and for all

A trade between the Chiefs and the Texans to say goodbye to Kadarius Toney once and for all

It’s certainly not reinventing the wheel to say that the Kansas City Chiefs have had their share of headaches and issues with wide receiver Kadarius Toney since acquiring him in a trade with the New York Giants for the former first-round pick. Costly drops, even more costly penalties, mental breakdowns, and just generally not playing up to his talent level have all been problematic for Toney.

With release day looming, the ideal scenario would likely be for the Chiefs to trade Toney. However, there is a devil’s advocate argument that is worth making: Keeping him on a weak receiver team (especially given the possibility of a Rashee Rice suspension) could still benefit the defending Super Bowl champions, who have won two straight titles.

But what if they could eliminate that need with another transfer, giving themselves a better opportunity to either trade or release Toney?

That would probably be the ideal scenario for the Chiefs’ offense and roster, and it just so happens that another potential AFC contender could be the perfect opponent for Kansas City to make such a move.

The Houston Texans have a surplus of talented wide receivers with Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell and Robert Woods, to name a few. However, Woods currently appears to be the underdog in the hierarchy, which could ultimately lead to him being a transfer candidate, a notion that Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine supported by putting Woods on the roster list.

Ballentine also listed the Chiefs as a team that Woods could help, so what would that deal look like? Here’s a proposed trade package that could bring the veteran to Kansas City.

The Texans are faced with a situation where they can either trade Woods for anything or release him. However, the trade would save them $1.5 million more than the alternative, so this is the preferred option, which would also benefit the Chiefs as they get a 2026 third-day pick back along with the veteran wideout for a sixth-round pick in the next draft.

Woods has essentially been a supporting cast member over the past three seasons with the Texans, Titans and Rams. In that span, he never caught more than 53 passes and never rushed for more than 556 yards. At the same time, though, all Kansas City needs is a supporting cast member, especially one who is exponentially more reliable than Toney.

After the additions of Marquise Brown (despite his current injury) and Xavier Worthy, who joins the currently unseated Rice in the pass-catching corps with Travis Kelce, the Chiefs don’t need to go on a big hunt to add weapons to Patrick Mahomes. They need to fill the depth and add injury insurance. The 32-year-old Woods still seems ideally suited for this offense.

There’s no guarantee the Chiefs will make this move, but it absolutely seems like they should be on the phone with Houston before cutdown day to see if they can make this trade before another potential contender does. The cost and value for Kansas City are too perfect a match not to.
