Mark your calendars: Important school days for Washtenaw parents

Before the new school year begins for local young people, there are some important days for parents to mark in their calendars.

The following school districts begin the school year on Monday: Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Manchester, Milan, Saline and Ypsilanti. This means there will be no classes on Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd due to Labor Day weekend.

Classes at Dexter Community Schools begin on Tuesday, September 3, with a half-day session for students.

Winter break will begin for all schools in the region on Monday, December 23, and classes will resume on Monday, January 6, according to a common calendar. Spring break will begin on Monday, March 24, and classes will begin on Monday, March 31.

The districts also have a long Thanksgiving weekend for families, with no school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 27-29.

All schools will have a day off, including Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day on Monday, February 17, and Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.

However, not all election days are off, nor do they all have the same half days or days off around long weekends and school holidays. These include Good Friday, April 18, and the Monday after Easter, April 21.

Ann Arbor Public Schools have moved their calendars forward this summer.

In Washtenaw County’s largest district, classes are closed on the following days:

  • Friday and Monday, 11 and 14 October, autumn break
  • Tuesday, November 5, for the parliamentary elections
  • Friday, February 14th and Monday and Tuesday, February 17th-18th, for the winter solstice
  • Friday, April 18 for Good Friday
  • Tuesday, May 6, for the spring election day.

All students in Ann Arbor will have a half day off on Wednesday, June 11, the last day of school.

In Chelsea, students will have additional days off school on Monday, October 14, Friday, November 1, and Monday, February 10. There will also be no school on February 17, Friday, April 18, and the following Monday, April 21.

Half term classes are scheduled for Friday 7 March in Chelsea, with the last day of school being Friday 6 June.

Dexter has the following days off school:

  • 11 and 14 October for the autumn holidays
  • Friday, November 1st
  • February 14 and 17, around Presidents Day
  • Friday and Monday, May 23 and 26, Memorial Day.

The school district will offer half-day classes on Thursday and Friday, November 7 and 8, Friday, December 13, Thursday and Friday, January 23 and 24, and Friday, April 18. Like in Ann Arbor, the last day of school for students will be a half-day on June 11.

In Manchester, school will end early on Fridays, October 4, February 14, and May 2. Manchester Junior-Senior High School will end at 12:15 p.m., Riverside Intermediate will end at 12:25 p.m., and Klager Elementary will end at 12:32 p.m.

Half-day classes will be held in Manchester on Friday, November 22, Friday, January 17, and the last day of school on Friday, June 6. There will be no school in the district on Friday, November 1, Presidents Day (February 17), and Friday, April 18.

In Milan there will be half days on Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, and on Friday, March 14. There will also be a half day on June 6.

There will be no classes in the local school district on the following days:

  • Friday, November 1st
  • Friday, January 17 and January 20 for MLK Day
  • Monday, February 17, for a winter break
  • Friday, February 28
  • Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21
  • Friday, May 9th.

At Saline, students have several half days followed by a free day. These include:

  • Half-day classes on Thursday, October 17, and school holidays on Friday, October 18
  • Half-day classes on Friday, January 17, and school off on Monday, January 20, due to Martin Luther King Day
  • There will be half-day classes on Friday, February 14, and no classes on Presidents Day, February 17.
  • There will be half-day classes on Thursday, April 18, and no classes on Friday, April 18.

There will be a half day of school for students in grades K-8 on Wednesday, November 20, and for all students in grades K-12 on Thursday and Friday, November 21 and 22. All Saline students will also have a half day of school on Thursday and Friday, March 6-7 and June 5-6, as their last day of school.

Ypsilanti Community Schools will offer half-day classes on the following days:

  • Friday, October 18
  • Wednesday and Thursday, October 23-24 and Thursday, October 31 for Halloween
  • Thursday and Friday, 19–20 December
  • Friday, March 14
  • Wednesday and Thursday, 19–20 March
  • Friday, May 23, before Memorial Day
  • Thursday and Friday, June 5-6, last day of school.

Students in Ypsilanti have the following days off school:

  • Friday and Monday, November 1st and 4th for a fall break
  • Tuesday, November 5, Election Day
  • Thursday and Friday, February 13-14 and Presidents Day on February 17 for a winter break
  • The Monday after Easter, April 21st.
