Trey Lance, No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, throws 5 interceptions in preseason game

Trey Lance started the Dallas Cowboys’ preseason game on Saturday, and it’s safe to say it was inconsistent.

The No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft threw for 323 yards with a 67.3% passing percentage, but also threw five interceptions in a 26-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

He was also their best runner, rushing for 90 yards on 11 attempts, including one touchdown on a 46-yard run.

His first pick came at midfield in the second quarter. During his team’s first drive of the third quarter, Lance marched his team into the red zone but threw his second pick of the game for a touchdown.

After Dallas scored on its next two drives, Lance’s final three drives each ended in an interception, including a pick-six. All three of those interceptions came in the final 4:14 of the game, with the last one coming on the game’s final play.

The Cowboys were at the Chargers’ 20-yard line looking to tie the score, but Lance’s pass into the end zone was intercepted by Robert Kennedy of the Chargers.

Lance has had a rough career so far. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers after they moved up from 12th to 3rd in the draft to grab the presumed heir to Jimmy Garoppolo.

After taking over the starting role in 2022, Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, and the emergence of Brock Purdy pushed Lance to the sidelines.

San Fran traded Lance to Dallas for a fourth-round pick almost exactly a year ago.

Right now, Lance is the third quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. The Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option this offseason, so Lance will be a free agent after this year.
