A BBC commentator has apologised to viewers from Milngavie after stumbling over the pronunciation of the East Dunbartonshire town at the Olympic Games.

The mixed team triathlon reached its thrilling climax when respected sports reporter Matt Chilton admitted he had mentioned Milngavie completely wrong when talking about Beth Potter’s former running club. And he apologised to viewers in Scotland after realising his error. Potter’s tenacity was there for all to see as she fought back to help Team GB to a second bronze medal, following her first in the women’s individual race last weekend.

In an interview with the BBC, the personable Chilton admitted he was surprised by the spelling, joking: “In her younger years she was a competitive swimmer for Bearsden and Milngavie and ran for Victoria Park in Glasgow. The club her father still competes for. I think I mispronounced Milngavie in the individual events. I apologise to some of my Scottish friends. I hope I get it right this time.”
