Danny Jansen will make MLB history on Monday.

The 29-year-old catcher will be the first player to play for two teams in the same game.

On June 26, the Toronto Blue Jays played against the Boston Red Sox. It was the second inning and Jansen, then with the Blue Jays, caused a foul on a pitch to the Red Sox starting pitcher, Kutter Crawford, and fell behind 0-1.

After this pitch, the umpire called for the tarp due to the weather and the game was stopped.

Play resumes on Monday, and instead of continuing his batting gig with the Blue Jays, Jansen will be behind the plate for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox acquired Jansen on July 27 in exchange for three minor league players. The starting catcher from the June 26 game, Reese McGuire, was reassigned to the minor leagues after the Sox signed Jansen.

The game report states that Jansen batted both as a Blue Jay and as a member of the Sox.

“I don’t know if it’s sunk in. It’s definitely a cool thing. I’m definitely grateful,” Jansen said. “Honestly, when I heard about it, I didn’t think I’d be the first. The game has been around for so long. It’s one of those oddities that happens in this sport. It’s extremely rare and cool.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced Friday that Jansen would serve as catcher.

“He’s catching. Let’s make history,” said Cora.

Since joining the Red Sox, Jansen has a .257 batting average with two home runs in 13 games.
