Developed by Gearbox Software, Half-life: Blueshift was an exciting expansion of the base game. It tells the same story as the original Half-lifebut instead focuses on Black Mesa security guard Barney Calhoun, who later plays a leading role in Half-life 2. Some would even call him one of Valve’s most iconic characters, despite not getting as much screen time as others. Seeing the same story through different eyes was a fascinating approach, and while it received mixed reviews upon its release in 2001, it’s easy to look back on its new ideas with affection over two decades later.

In the last month, this expansion to one of the best FPS games of all time had between 60 and 100 players, which is a pretty big jump for the game.

The numbers have since stabilized, but it will be interesting to see if Lambda Generation hosts something like this community event again in the future.

Almost two decades have passed since the publication of Half-life 2and the wait for a third main entry in the series continues. Half-life: Alyx is the closest thing players have to a modern game in the series, although its VR exclusivity means it is still unavailable to many players. A recent leak revealed that Half-life 3 could be in development again at Valve, although it’s all speculation until the developer officially announces something.
