Eureka breaks 27-year-old rainfall record after ‘rare’ late-summer storm | Lost Coast Outpost

How about the rain, hmm?

Yesterday’s “almost winter” weather broke all precipitation records here on the North Shore. Our friends at the National Weather Service’s Woodley Island office say August 23, 2024 was the wettest August ever recorded in Eureka and Crescent City.

As it turns out, this whole month was wetter than usual.

“Normal precipitation for the entire month of August here on Woodley Island is usually about 0.18 inches. So far this month we have had 1.34 inches,” NWS meteorologist Johnathon White told the outpost this morning. “It’s not unusual for a winter storm to come this early, but it’s definitely not normal. If we look back at other records that were broken in August, we’ve had about an inch or more of rainfall on about six other days.”

However, it is rare for there to be so much rain so early in the season, which usually only begins in late September or October.

We can expect “summer-like” weather for the rest of the month, White said. Temperatures are expected to drop tonight in some inland areas, but the rest of the weekend and next week should be mostly sunny. Get out there and enjoy the sunshine while you still can, Humboldt!
